Weekend musings

Now that the race season is in full swing, and with three weekends of racing behind me, it's finally time for a bike related post.

Every year there are racers who are just "passing through." These are Über talented women who rocket through the categories at hypersonic speed. Two years ago that woman was Emily Van Meter, last year it was Virginia Perkins and this year it is Kristy Gough (Third Pillar). Kristy Gough has been riding away from the field and winning races since the first of the year. She has swiftly moved up the ranks and yesterday's Merco road race was her last race as a CAT 3. She has NRC quality talent written all over her and one of the local pro teams would be smart to swoop in and scoop her up. Kristy not only does well in road races, but she can ride with the best in crits as evidenced with her 4th place finish last weekend at the Mered crit behind Emilia Fahlin (High Road), Rushlee Buchanan (TIBCO) and Anke Wichmann (High Road).

Talking about talent, how about Proman's Virginia Perkins coming in 4th in the Merco Credit Union Grand Prix and 3rd in the Merco Foothills Road Race. Way to go Virginia! Both races had strong representation from the High Road, Proman, VAC, Tibco and Vanderkitten teams.

Here is Virginia looking cool, calm and collected before the start of the crit on Saturday. The Merco Grand Prix Master's 35+ 1/2/3 race saw the emergence of this year's dynamic duo, and no, I am not talking about Batman and Robin. I am referring to the lethal team of Michael Hutchinson and Roger Bennett from Morgan Stanley/24 Hr Fitness/Specialized. The two were part of a 9 man break that got away some 15 laps into the race. Hutchinson was on fireand slayed himself to perfectly deliver Bennett to the line for the win!It was a great team effort and a sign of what's to come this season. With his 4th place finish in the Merco Foothills Road Race, Bennett now leads the 99 series!

And what of that lone Safeway racer? We know he's out there racing and lined up for both Merco races this past weekend. I would suspect it's only a matter of time before he lands on the podium.
