Web 2.0 is fascinating

I moved into a new position at work on January 1st and have been charged with developing the marketing strategy for our business internet portal. As a result, I have been doing a lot of reading and research on social media and web 2.0.

What is Web 2.0 you might ask. It is a term that describes the trend in the use of the Internet and web technologies to encourage and enhance creativity, information sharing, and collaboration among users. These concepts have led to the development of web-based communities and hosted services, such as social-networking sites (MySpace and Friendster) and user generated content (wikis and blogs).

User-generated content lets everyone have their say on anything and publish it to the world at large. These days users are augmenting the news by reporting current events sometimes faster and with details often overlooked or ignored by the professional news media.

Although millions of opinions and videos, often very amateurish, only add to our information overload, an advantage to user-generated content is that truly talented authors, artists, musicians and moviemakers can gain an audience much more easily than they could in the past.

Pretty fascinating stuff if you ask me.

What's really cool is that I was asked if I want to become one of the featured bloggers on our company's business portal blog. That could be really fun! It is probably a better use of my blogging time than this little blog that no one reads anyway.
