Double-edged sword

The Internet is a "double-edged sword." While on the one hand it provides access to information, on the other hand too much information can cause unnecessary panic and/or make you feel overwhelmed.

Take for instance the following information I found online about my shoulder injury:

Minor Osteolysis can be remedied with 1 to 3 cortisone shots, and 4-6 weeks rest. Cortisone takes 3 weeks to get fully absorbed... And for another 3-6 weeks it weakens the integrity of the connective tissue in the area.

Since pain results from the ends of the bones making contact with each other, the treatment involves removing 5-10 mm's of bone from the Distal Clavical, and then over the course of 4-6 months your body will build fibrous scar tissue to fill in, essentially sealing the joint for the rest of your life.

This outpatient surgery can be performed through a small incision about one inch long or arthroscopically, using several small incisions. Regardless of the technique utilized, recovery and results are about the same. Full motion by six weeks and return to activity by 12 weeks. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!

I sure hope that does not mean I will be off my bike for three months or I can kiss the 2008 season goodbye.

I think I am going to cry. At a minimum, I am going to get a second opinion from an ortho in Boston and demand that Dr. Dreamy run an MRI. I need and want concrete information and an action plan NOW, not three weeks from now.

I am trying not to panic. I need to exhale... how did I get here?

at least you don't have to pedal with your arms. even with surgery, you could sit on the trainer and maintain some fitness.

and I'm a big believer in 2nd opinions.

even if you need surgery, you won't be off the bike that long.

i was on the trainer in 2 and out on the bike in 4, and i am sure you are tougher than me...

and yes, keep getting opinions and asking questions....and don't believe everything you read on the web....
