Out with the junta

Things are heating up in Myanmar, a country near and dear to my heart. Over 10,000 monks hit the streets of Yangon to protest the brutal military junta. It was the largest act of defiance against the government since the student uprising back in 1988.

What's interesting about this protest is that it's being led by Buddhist monks. If the government takes action against the monks the situation will escalate much faster than the one back in 1988.

Some of the protesting monks are calling for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the National League for Democracy, who is under house arrest. Aung San Suu Kyi remains a martyr and symbol of freedom for the population.

The situation in Myanmar is expected to be a priority at the UN session starting this week. Maybe the UN will find a way to eliminate the brutal military regime once and for all and allow the Burmese people the freedom they deserve.
