Going casual

When is casual too casual or is there such a thing? Casual dressing at work gained popularity during the Dot Com boom. After the Dot-Com bubble burst, many companies reinstated dress codes. Companies that had allowed blue jeans starting requiring "business casual."

When it comes to dress codes, one size does not fit all:
- some companies have a professional dress code for every day of the week
- some have casual Fridays
- others have a casual dress policy every day of the week.

I am lucky to work for a company that allows me to wear jeans to work every day!

The business casual phenomenon that has swept the nation has led to numerous fashion faux pas, such as baring more than co-workers need, or want, to see.Look around the office where you work. I am sure there is some girl with a skirt slit up to her naval and a low-cut blouse at serious risk of a wardrobe malfunction. The waistband of some guy's jeans is most likely clinging to his hips for dear life, and "boxers or briefs?" is no mystery. Apparently, the suit is still the attire of choice for "powerful men and women." Most people who earn $250,000 a year or more work in suits. For the rest, there is one word for most of today's business attire: sloppy. Has casual Friday given people license to abandon any semblance of professionalism? Are you more productive when you are dressed comfortably? I wonder.

When did people stop tucking in their shirts? It seems as if no one tucks them in any more. Not just men, but women too. Has the casual dress phenomenon gone too far? Have jeans and an untucked shirt become the suit for our generation and those making less than $250K? Are we all destined to look like slobs?

Yes.

Me too! I could never go back to wearing nylons or a suit to work. Comfort is key.

OK, snobbery... people can't dress in Denver... oh maybe it's just my office. i am always pressed and I wear the "suit" with leaving the jacket at home everyday. oh, it's so sad to see those bad silk sweaters all week and then a bad T and jeans on Friday. I don't partake. Makes me cry... where will I wear my shoes?

too funny! now that I don't have to dress up for work, I look for opportunities whenever I get the chance. summer picnic? I'm in a dress. evening out with friends? ditto. I've even found little ways to dress up my "work" attire, which is casual by the nature of my work. I miss being dressy and pretty!
