San Ardo is one of the eight races I did the first year that I raced, and I hated it. It was flat, hot and boring. After the race I swore that I would never do it again, and yet I am going to eat those words as I have decided to line up on Saturday!
"What the hell is she thinking," those of you who know me might ask. Well, I had so much fun at Dunnigan Hills last weekend (a race I had not done before specifically because it was flat), that I have decided to have a go and do another flat race.
The problem is that it virtually guarantees that the University road race the following day will be as excruciatingly painful as possible. At one level, that's a shame since University is my #1 favorite race on the NCNCA race calendar. Why you might ask? Because it's all up and down with virtually no flats. My kind of race!
Then why not save my legs and focus on University as I did last year?
Here is my reasoning:
1. University is a 1/2/3 race and so I will surely get my ass kicked in a major way by the über W1/2 climbing specialists.
2. Given the field is likely to include 2008 Olympic hopefuls, I do not stand a chance of scoring a coveted Velo Promo t-shirt.
3. This is one of those rare weekends when there are two road races and so I should take advantage of the opportunity.
4. Racing is the best training and so I should race as much as I possibly can.
I must be crazy. Bring on the pain.
